What Is Sound Therapy?

Sound can be used to help us improve our health and wellbeing in many different ways. In recent years there has been a growing interest in sound therapy/healing and modern science has helped us develop a greater understanding of how this works on the mind and body.

Sound baths or gong baths are relaxing events where the participants typically lie on the ground and listen to the gentle soundscapes created by a range of instruments but most commonly by gongs, singing bowls and crystal bowls. A sound bath normally involves different types of instruments, a gong bath normally focuses on a range of gongs. The sounds are merged together in a careful manner to enable the participants at the session to enter into a deep state of relaxation which can have a range of therapeutic benefits.

These benefits can be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. It is not a prescriptive process and it is entirely up to the individual how it is received and used. This means that you do not have to have a certain mindset or background to attend a sound bath or gong bath, or to benefit deeply from its calming effects. It is open to everyone!

The sounds work in many complex ways, but the key element is that the sounds lower the brainwave activity to a restful state that is similar to daydreaming or when you are just about to fall asleep. Being in this state for regular short periods of time can be hugely beneficial to the mind and body.

When you come along to a sound or gong bath you will need to bring a comfortable mat to lie on, a pillow, at least one blanket, an eye cover and a bottle of water. It is important to make sure you are comfortable and warm. Before the session starts the process will be explained to you so that you are fully aware of what will be happening. You will then lie down and listen to the relaxing sounds for approximately 45 minutes to an hour (for a typical session).

Many people attend these sessions just to relax and unwind and a well played session will have a deeply calming and beneficial effect on you.

I carry our regular soundbath sessions in my local area of Haslemere/Hindhead and cover Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire.

Soundbaths are not normally suitable for people with serious heart conditions, severe mental illness, seizures or epilespy, or early stages of pregnancy but this is not always the case and in many cases this is absolutely fine, please get in touch if you have any of these conditions and would like to attend a soundbath so we can work out the best solution for you.
